Road Striping & Traffic Paint Mixers for IBC Totes

Keep Traffic Paint Uniform. Mix Before Loading or at the Job Site.

Road striping paint can settle during storage, leaving pigments and solids concentrated at the bottom of an IBC tote. Without proper mixing, crews may transfer paint that is no longer uniform, potentially affecting material consistency during pavement-marking operations.

EvenMix® portable IBC tote mixers help re-suspend settled traffic paint directly in its container. Our patented folding blade technology creates vertical and horizontal circulation to help restore a uniform mixture without relying on a deep, air-drawing surface vortex.

Designed for portability and flexibility, EvenMix offers electric, air-driven, and battery-powered mixers for compatible storage yards, striping trucks, and remote job sites.

The challenge

Why Does Road Striping Paint Need Mixing?

Liquid traffic paint contains pigments, resins, and other components dispersed throughout a liquid base. During storage, certain formulations can separate, allowing heavier solids to accumulate near the bottom of the container.

ASTM D8008-20, Standard Practice for Representative Field Sampling of Traffic Paints, recognizes that some traffic paints can become non-homogeneous over time. Its sampling guidance identifies thorough mixing as a preferred method for obtaining a representative liquid sample.

For road striping operations, the practical objective is straightforward: restore paint uniformity before transferring it to application equipment.

Mixing cannot repair paint damaged by freezing, contamination, degradation, or improper storage. Always follow the paint manufacturer’s handling and mixing requirements.

This can create several operational challenges:

The EvenMix advantage

How EvenMix Helps Keep Traffic Paint Uniform

EvenMix takes a different approach to industrial mixing. Instead of relying on a deep surface vortex, our patented variable-pitch folding blades are engineered to circulate liquid both vertically and horizontally throughout the container.

01

Patented Folding Blade Technology

EvenMix blades fold for insertion through a compatible IBC tote opening and expand to approximately 16 inches in diameter during operation.

This design helps move liquid through the container, including material near the bottom and corners where solids can accumulate.

Dual-blade configurations provide circulation at two levels, making them a useful starting point when evaluating traffic paint applications with significant settlement.

02

Circulation Without a Deep Surface Vortex

Aggressive surface agitation can introduce air into liquid coatings. Depending on the formulation and operating conditions, entrained air may contribute to foaming or application difficulties.

EvenMix is designed to establish axial and radial circulation without depending on a deep surface funnel, helping limit unnecessary air incorporation while re-suspending settled material.

03

Lightweight, Portable Equipment

Road striping operations move between garages, maintenance facilities, storage yards, and active job sites.

EvenMix mixers are compact and lightweight, allowing crews to move equipment between compatible containers rather than relying on a permanent mixing station.

Mix your traffic paint where it is stored, before transferring it to where it is needed.

Application flexibility

Two Ways to Use an EvenMix Road Striping Paint Mixer

Mix at the source before loading, or evaluate an onboard setup when the container, mounting arrangement, and power supply allow it.

Most common workflow

1. Mix Traffic Paint Before Loading the Striping Truck

For many operations, the most practical approach is to mix traffic paint directly in its source IBC tote at the garage, storage yard, or staging facility.

The EvenMix mixer circulates paint inside the tote to help re-suspend settled pigments and solids before material enters the truck’s transfer or application system.

This approach can help crews:

For municipalities and contractors working through multiple paint totes during a striping season, this provides a repeatable process for preparing material before loading.

Mobile application

2. Mix Paint at the Truck or Job Site

Some road striping operations carry a paint tote or another suitable container directly on a truck or position it at a remote work location.

With the proper mounting arrangement and available power, an EvenMix mixer may be used at the vehicle or job site.

Battery-powered configurations offer cord-free operation, while electric and air-driven systems can be considered when suitable utilities are available.

Onboard mixing requires confirmation of container stability, cap compatibility, blade clearance, operating conditions, and power capacity.

Common question

Why Not Rely on the Truck's Paint Pump?

Paint transfer pumps and recirculation systems serve important functions, but moving paint through a line does not automatically mean that settled material throughout an IBC tote has been re-suspended.

The effectiveness of recirculation depends on the system’s intake location, return location, flow pattern, and container geometry.

An EvenMix IBC tote mixer addresses the material directly within the container where it is installed.

For crews mixing before loading, this provides a way to address settlement in the original tote before transfer. Existing pumps and tank agitators can continue performing their intended functions within the striping equipment.

Application review

What to Check Before Ordering a Traffic Paint Mixer

Not all traffic paint totes use the same opening, cap, or mounting arrangement. Confirming these details before ordering helps ensure that the mixer fits and operates as intended.

Container and cap compatibility

Standard IBC totes commonly use a 6-inch opening, but traffic paint may also arrive in containers with 9-inch caps, tall caps, large drum-style lids, or other mounting arrangements.

Shaft length and blade clearance

The shaft and blade positions must match the actual container depth, expected fill level, and bottom clearance. Nonstandard tanks and truck-mounted vessels may require a different configuration.

Power availability

Confirm the applicable electrical supply, inverter capacity, compressed-air flow, or battery requirements before choosing a drive.

Paint formulation and operating environment

Review the manufacturer’s technical data sheet and safety data sheet. Solvent-borne paints, flammable atmospheres, and other specialized conditions require additional equipment and safety evaluation.

EvenMix can review container dimensions, cap photographs, and operating requirements to help recommend an appropriate setup.

Understand the opportunity

Can Better Mixing Help Reduce Traffic Paint Waste?

For high-volume road striping operations, even small amounts of usable paint left in each container can become significant over an entire season.

Consider an operation using 50 totes annually. If five gallons of paint remain in each container, that represents 250 gallons of purchased material left behind.

5 gallons × 50 totes = 250 gallons of remaining paint

The actual recoverable amount depends on the formulation, degree of settlement, container geometry, and transfer equipment. Mixing does not guarantee that all remaining material can be recovered.

However, when usable settled material contributes to leftover paint, improved container mixing may help reduce the amount left behind.

For crews managing multiple totes, it is worth measuring how much usable paint remains before and after an appropriate mixing trial.

Mixing White, Yellow, and Specialty Traffic Paints

Road striping crews often handle white, yellow, black, and specialty marking paints.

When using the same mixer with different products, proper cleaning is essential to prevent color carryover and cross-contamination.

EvenMix offers modular mixer components that allow compatible drives to be shared with separate shaft-and-blade assemblies.

For operations handling multiple colors, dedicating paint-contact assemblies to each color may simplify changeovers while reducing contamination risks.

Frequently Asked Questions About Traffic Paint Mixing

Does traffic paint settle in an IBC tote?
Yes. Some liquid traffic paint formulations can separate over time, allowing pigments and solids to concentrate near the bottom. Proper mixing helps restore uniformity when the paint remains suitable for use.
Mixing the source tote before loading can help ensure more uniform material enters the transfer system. Always follow the paint manufacturer’s instructions and applicable project specifications.
Typically, most paint manufacturers would ask to use a specific type of mixer to reagitate traffic paint. Using the wrong mixer (ex. a high speed/high shear drive) could cause unneeded air entrapment, chemical/color changes, and can make reagition of the bottom and corners of the container difficult. Generally, a low-shear, high-torque, low/no-vortex mixer will be gentle enough not to shear the material while using the drive’s torque to mix thicker traffic paint successfully. All of EvenMix’s Mixer Packages are considered low shear, high torque and typically will not generate a vortex. The patented variable-pitch blade design also achieves both vertical and horizontal flow patterns within the container, ensuring the corners and bottom are homogeneous with the rest of the container.
Yes, when the container, mounting arrangement, shaft clearance, operating environment, and available power are suitable. EvenMix can review nonstandard truck-mounted configurations before selection.
Not necessarily. Recirculation may contribute to mixing, but effectiveness depends on its flow pattern and whether circulation reaches settled material throughout the container.
There is no universal mixing time. The required duration depends on the paint formulation, container volume, temperature, and degree of settlement. Uniformity should be confirmed according to the paint manufacturer’s requirements.

Yes. Compatible EvenMix drives can be shared across separate mixing assemblies. Clean paint-contact components thoroughly or use dedicated shafts and blades to help prevent color contamination.

No. Traffic paint containers can use different cap diameters, heights, threads, and mounting styles. Confirm the actual opening and container dimensions before ordering.
